Infertility can be a painful realization for some women. One such condition is uterine factor infertility. An estimated 1 in 500 women worldwide are affected by this irreversible condition making pregnancy seem unattainable. However, the Cleveland Clinic announced this summer the birth of a second child resulting from a uterine transplant from a deceased donor. This all took place during an ongoing clinical trial. The patient selected underwent IVF and cryopreservation of embryos for use after the transplant. The patient then needed to wait for a viable deceased donor for the transplant surgery to take place. This story was a success! However, this experience is only one of many surrounding the struggles, defeats and triumphs of infertility.
Witnessing these struggles through my interactions with physicians, embryologists, technicians and hearing patient testimonials has shown me that the world of infertility is so much more than a diagnosis. It can be life changing. Compounding doctor’s appointments, injections, medications, pain, loss, sadness are just a few of the challenges faced by those struggling with infertility. And yet there is still hope. The support from physicians, support from family, support from science. Support from those that work tirelessly day in and day out to give the opportunity of pregnancy.
