The most common reproduction method on swine breeding farms is artificial insemination. In boar studs, the need to produce semen doses with in vitro quality and longevity of post-ejaculated semen is important.
There are multiple sources of bacteria on the farm. These sources are of both animal and non-animal origin and can have a real impact on semen quality and on reproduction results.

Semen contamination increases when two or more factors directly related to the hygiene of the semen collection procedure are simultaneously present.
The bacteria found in boar semen is particularly resistant.
Many trials have been done to show the resistance of bacterial contamination in boar semen.

Many bacterial species can be isolated during the trial. Gram-negative bacteria is more resistant to antibiotics and represents the majority of bacteria in semen.
